Maduro Oil Crisis

This committee will cover the serious economic catastrophe in Venezuela caused by remarkable drops in the price of oil worldwide, from January 2015 to the present day. President Nicolas Maduro inherited the country as Hugo Chavez’s hand-picked successor, winning election to his office narrowly against opposition leader Henrique Capriles the same year as the oil price dropped. Oil forms the backbone of the economy, and trouble in the crude oil market has rippling effects on the nation’s fiscal stability. Venezuela is beset by myriad challenges at the moment including domestic economic collapse, trade deal failure, widespread lawlessness, military discontent, suppressed media and political opposition drawing increasing amounts of international attention, and vast networks of nepotism and corruption which cripple the government’s effectiveness. Will the nation survive these woes? Will the leadership of Venezuela step up to the plate? Thirty million people depend on this committee to sail the country through troubled times and worsening economic storms.
